The Society has been run for and open to children from Cairns and District aged 8 to 18 years inclusive for 60 years and is the only Youth Choir in Cairns run entirely by volunteers - which helps to keep tuition fees to a minimum.

wishes to say

for our successful 2015 grant.
Renovation photos on Facebook

We were able to add an extension fo the side of the hall which enabled us to raise and internalise two new toilets (one wheel-chair accessable) and also create space for a future kitchen.
This work is almost complete and has already made "life at the hall" much more comfortable for all.
Special thanks must also go to the following people whose support also went a long way to our success.......
and other members of the public who supported us in many different ways but who wish to remain anonymous. Thankyou to Cairns City Council in 2015

2012 Townsville Eisteddfod
"Well done from such young choristers!"

The Cairns Junior Choral Society returned recently from their very successful trip to Townsville where they represented Cairns at the 2012 Townsville Eisteddfod.

"just a few of the proud choristers"

While only 21 members were available for the trip, the choir was still able to take out two Firsts one Third and one Highly Commended - even though some of their competition boasted up to 70 voices plus!  They were also extremely happy and proud to win the Grade 10 and under Championship.

"a very happy choir"

Here are just a few of the Adjudicator's comments...

"Well done from such young choristers!"
"Excellent diction - A most effective performance!"
"Wonderfully costumed" (for the Novelty which was an excerpt from our recent musical,
"Alice in Wonderland"
"Blend and tone, excellent"
"Good attention to dynamics"

"enjoying a meal...."YUMMMMMMM"

All in all it was a great trip, not just because of their success, but everyone, including the supervisors, had
a fantastic time.
The children (and their conductor) would also like to make mention of, and THANK VERY MUCH, those parents
who took the time to travel to Townsville to support us.  It was JUST GREAT to see you all there.  Thank you.

"one of the hard working supervisors"

When we return after the holidays we will be working towards three or four Christmas Concerts - including
the Carols By Candlelight at Fogarty Park.
See you all at our first practice after the holidays - Tuesday 9th October.  New members - all young people aged from 7 to 18 inclusive, female AND male - always most welcome.

For further info on becoming a member, please phone me on Phone/Fax (07) 4051 2064 Mob: 0437 942 019 – and I'll help you get started.

About Us

In the early 1950’s, a local school teacher with a love of music decided he would like to form a Junior Choir in Cairns and give the youth of Cairns and District the chance to make beautiful music together.

The teacher – Mr Jack Daniel, along with a group of like-minded citizens of Cairns, got together and approached the then Cairns City Council for their blessing and support which they received, and the Cairns Juvenile Choir was formed. The rest, as they say is history.
After working very hard each year for the next few years raising funds to be able to send the choir off to compete in a number of Eisteddfodau throughout Queensland - Charters Towers, Townsville, Rockhampton and Brisbane to name but a few, this same committee decided it would be much cheaper, not to mention more beneficial to all the youth of Cairns and District to run a Junior Eisteddfod in Cairns.

Once again this same committee approached the Cairns City Council with this idea and The Cairns Juvenile Eisteddfod was formed.

Both organisations changed their names in the early 1060’s to “The Cairns Junior Choral Society” and “The Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod”.

The Cairns Junior Choral Society Inc. (run entirely by volunteers – with Conductor and Accompanist both professionals in their own rights) has been running successfully ever since.

The choir competes in two, sometimes three, eisteddfodau each year, along with other “sing-outs” if and when required – There are also Theory/Musicianship classes offered.

A few years ago, the Society commenced producing a musical each year, all singing, dancing and acting performed by the members within the Society.

Some of the fun musicals we have done are Listen to the Lambs” – “Phantom of the Music Room” – A Trip through Storyland” – “Oh Rats!” – “Jungle Fantasy” to name a few. Currently we are all working hard on “Alice in Wonderland” to be performed on Saturday 19th May, at the Performing Arts Centre at Bentley Park. Keep your eyes and ears open for further information.

Yvonne Gardner

Mrs Linda Scanlan

Born and bred in Cairns, I grew up attending Cairns Junior Choral Society concerts. So I was thrilled to be elected President for 2011/2012 year. I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in the childrens' voices during the year and impressed by their grasp of theatre after they had produced 'Jungle Fantasy'.

Although not a performer myself, I am a very enthusiastic audience and really feel satisfaction that my small contribution allows the children to continue enjoying music, in all its variety. From practice to choir, Eisteddfod work, musical plays and dramas, a whole new depth and panorama of music is displayed for their participation.

Whether they choose to go further with their music or just enjoy their involvement, will depend on support from their parents, conductor and committee.

So although sometimes I could miss a meeting, I know both the students and myself are being enriched by the music and songs and this makes it all worthwhile.

Mrs Theresa Wallwork

Hi. My name is Theresa and I am from a Cairns family. My parents are Brian and Eva Gibbs. Eva is Toni Dunstan’s sister. For the past 25 years I have been the Catholic Bishop’s secretary and Administration Assistant for St Monica’s Cathedral parish.

About 4 years ago Toni asked me if I would be interested in being the secretary of the Society. Toni nominated me and I was duly elected. I have held this position since 2007 and I enjoy my involvement with all the people associated with the Society. I also enjoy watching the children grow in confidence through their years of involvement with the choir.

I enjoy singing in choirs.  I am a member of the St Monica’s Cathedral Choir and also a member of an acapella group called Woyaya with Jane Younghusband. I am married to John and we have 8 children and 17 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Four of our grandchildren have been part of the choir over the past years.

I hope to be able to continue with my involvement on the committee for some time to come to be able to support and encourage our young ones as they continue to produce magnificent sounds to enhance their cultural life and that of the community in which they live.

Mrs Toni Dunstan

Toni Dunstan is a long-time local. She is an original member of the Cairns Junior Choral Society and this is her second stint with this choir.

Miss Belinda Worthy.  Toni was also Belinda's first Piano and Theory teacher.
Toni remembers Belinda as a very hard working, conciencious and dedicated student
and her work ethic doesn't seem to have changed at all.

Toni thanks Belinda for giving up her very valuable time to dedicate herself to the choir and is very excited to be able to work with her in this capacity.

Toni is a long-time local Piano and Theory Teacher here in Cairns and she offers her expertise in Theory to all the Choristers by conducting a Theory/Musicianship Class prior to Choir Rehearsals.

Toni says her love of children is what keeps her motivated. She decided, when she took the choir over for this second time that she wanted to extend the children’s performing experiences by producing a musical each year.

This has been done and hopefully will continue for a long time to come.

Margaret Willis

After a 2 year sabbatical, we welcome back our accompanist Margaret Willis whom just can't stay away from her beloved CJCS choristers.

Margaret's Webpage
Cairns String Quartet

The CJC would like to thank Suna Flynn for filling in while Margaret had a much needed break.

Suna Flynn

I am born in Hong Kong, a mixture of Taiwanese and Hong Kong Chinese. Raised in a Christian and Catholic background family. After 1997 when Hong Kong return to China my parents brought me to Taiwan so I study my high school and University there.
I got my piano teaching approval through Japanese Piano Examination system which equivalents to the Diploma for Piano and Theory here around 16. I have started tutoring since but stop 2 years ago due to the illness of my daughter.
I studied German for 2 years in Fu-jen Catholic University but find out my passion towards music was not slowing down so I took on a advisor position for piano clubs in University. And after that I decided to give up my language study and went back to Hong Kong to teach piano, theory, Mandrin language for living.
2008, I met my daughter's father during a holiday back to Taiwan and in the end of that year I decided to move to our beautiful Cairns. After my daughter coming alone I started working in childcare and wished to bring her to work with me everyday. I have finished Cert III and keep studying Diploma of Early Children Service during this time. Like Toni, I enjoy being with children and love to share anything I can for the community. I feel very lucky and loved being part of the choir.

Wardrobe Mistress

Carmel Stoy

Hello, I’m Carmel Stoy and my husband Dick and I retired to Cairns – from Balina – in 2001. I am the Wardrobe Mistress for The Cairns Junior Choral Society.

Shortly after arriving in Cairns I joined the St Monica’s Diocesan Choir under the direction of Mrs Toni Dunstan. Over the years Toni and I became quite good friends.

When Toni told me she had taken over as Conductor of The Cairns Junior Choral Society (for the second time), and that the committee needed a Treasurer, I gladly agreed to take on the position for eighteen months. “HA HA HA!!!”

I have now been a volunteer for The Cairns Junior Choral Society for approximately 7 years.

As the choir grew, making the Uniforms plus Costumes for the annual Musical virtually became a full time job, which naturally meant I had to hand over the Treasurer’s job to one of the parents.

I wouldn’t like to count the number of costumes I have made so far, however, I have thoroughly enjoy the challenge and I get a real kick out of seeing my creations come to life on the stage.

I now look forward to the time when my own three grandchildren will be able to join the choir!

Sound Engineer

Nigel Pegrum
of Pegasus Studios Cairns

Nigel Pegrum has been the Cairns Junior Choral Society sound engineer for several years, and with his experience and expertise, is able to provide individual radio microphones and performance training for all lead performers to help them develop the skills and confidence needed

After a misspent youth playing in rock bands in London in the 60’s, including stints with The Small Faces (later to become Rod Stewart and Faces) and heavy metal band Uriah Heap, Nigel joined the British folk rock band Steeleye Span.

Nigel recorded and toured internationally with Steeleye for seventeen years, earning five gold and seven silver albums. The band also had their-own television show in England.

During this time Nigel created his own record label producing some thirty five jazz, blues and folk albums in addition to producing material for other labels, film, television and radio, including Torvill and Dean’s legendary version of Ravel’s Bolero.

Since emigrating to Australia, Nigel has, in his Cairns studio, produced over one hundred CD’s. In 2004 ‘Perfect Pearl’ by Torres Strait Islander, Seaman Dan, co-produced and engineered by Nigel, won the ARIA award for best world music album.

Nigel has also been recognised by the Queensland Recording Association, being awarded at various times, Best Producer, Best Engineer, Best Indigenous Album and Best Album Overall.

In addition to his involvement in Australian Sun Records Nigel continues to run his own recording facility ‘Pegasus Studios’ and production company ‘Hysterical Cat Productions’ in partnership with Mark Mannock.
